sleep to dream

… this is the world that we’ll be living in … out of the dreams of ordinary men …

Ever have a dream that you want to happen again?

OK, sure, it might be one of those sticky dreams, but the reason I got to thinking about this was that I had a dream this morning that was a lot like an action movie. I used to have a recurring dream where I would get one step further each time because I knew how to avoid getting killed each time, but this morning’s dream was different. The pictures that I can recall were as if they had been shot for a movie, the angles, the structure, the composition and lighting. I wasn’t the lead character in the movie, but I had a part — I was a sniper in a built up city area trying to take someone out, looking for the best place to get the right shot. At times, I was looking through my own eyes, at times I was watching myself going about my business.

I don’t want to have the dream again because I want to be a sniper, or shoot bad guys, I just want to know what happened. I want to know if I was a good guy or a bad guy, because I don’t remember. I woke up thinking, “now that was a cool story,” but can’t remember much of it now.

When I was a kid, we used to think that if you were saying or thinking what you wanted to dream about just before you fell asleep, that you would have a dream about it. Not sure if it ever really worked, but it’d be great to be able to re-enter a dream the next night, or nights after. I know that when I’m having one of those dozing-in-the-morning dreams, where you’re semi-lucid, that I’ve been able to fall asleep and take things up where they left off, but never after a long period between sleep.

Ahh, to sleep, perchance to dream…
